Andrew Davies – Glorious Greenwich

DLR Train at Canary Wharf

We went on a very special walk with Andrew this Autumn that began with a journey on the Dockland Light Railway through parts of the East End of London, Canary Wharf, Docklands and across the Isle of Dogs, taking in Millwall Park and its ‘homes fit for heroes’ dating back to World War I.

We then walked under the Thames through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, emerging near the Cutty Sark at Greenwich.  The tunnel was opened in 1902 but in recent years it has been completely renovated – including new lifts and lighting plus CCTV coverage.

Following lunch, the afternoon heralded a feast of great architecture: we visited Sir Christopher Wren’s magnificent Royal Naval College, now the University of Greenwich and the Nicholas Hawksmoor church, St. Alfege, plus the famous National Maritime Museum.   This museum displays many artefacts connected to Lord Nelson but also now has a wide variety of galleries covering space travel, the Polar region, Pacific islands, models of ships and navigational instruments.
